Diving

Throughout the trip, Prof. Kaplan kept saying that photography is literal. I know I'm a victim of trying to look into photos beyond the literal. So, while doing this story I tried to keep in mind the literal aspects that tell the story. Beyond the odd suggestive looks, "meaningful" light and "purposeful" juxtaposition is the man pulling a sponge out of the water. I love all that intellectual photo ish, but sometimes it helps to forget it.

This one's for Kohl.

love this post. the photo is very cool in all of its straighforward-ness. you changed your whole blog's look, yo. i like it. did you go underwater at all?

I did go underwater, but the water wasn't as clear as I'd hoped. I did get some of him cutting the sponges from the bottom, but I thought this photo said the same thing.

Justin showed me your blog and I am very impressed, I love your compositions. Do you do a lot of cropping after-the-fact? Also what sort of equipment do you use? I hope on our Thailand trip I can get just a few shots that come close to as nice as your average shot.

Thanks for the compliments. Most photographers try as much as they can to compose the photo exactly as they want to see it, without cropping after the fact. So, I usually don't crop unless it is really necessary or if the circumstances were such that I couldn't come up with the exact composition I want. I have a Canon 20D and a couple lenses. You guys will have such a great time on your trip. I'm sure you will come out with some gorgeous photos...it's probably a very visual place. I'd love to see some photos of your adventures, so I hope you guys keep up a blog.

"photography is literal" i'll have to remember that - too often i try so hard to be different and show things in a new way that i forget my purpose. good reminder. great posts lately.
