Tarpon Springs

I spent the last couple days in Tarpon Springs, Fla. to experience the processing of the sponges for sale. Pete Skaroulis' grandson, Nicholas, works in their processing warehouse in Tarpon Springs. I spent a day with him to capture the process with an attempt to bring the story full circle. I grew up about 15 minutes from Tarpon but never really appreciated what was happened there until now. It's the largest population of Greeks outside Greece and they came over to sponge dive due to the lack of work in Greece. Nicholas said the situation is still the same, and Nicholas said that he only goes back to Greece to visit.
This is the main strip in Tarpon Springs, where merchants sell sponges and other tourist items.

Awesome, Tim, absolutely awesome. Makes living so close to Tarpon have a new meaning actually. Loved going there to look and learn, but you have captured the spirit of the community.

Beautiful my dear, I love the first one with Nicolas' pensive face and the cut out of the muscle man in the background. :)

two would be awesome in your story if you don't have something already that's comparably dynamic. i really like it. the whole tobacco-stained feel to this industry is emphasized with dude's mini cigar. one is very beautiful though. i had to study three for a while to really appreciate it. once you get it though, you don't want to stop looking.

ps - number one and the one with pete and spoogy are eerie similar. it could father and son diptych, yo. not that it makes any sense for your story, but they are totally parallel in content and feel.
